The Undoing of Yau

Okay, so it's been three days, and I'm reconciled with the loss of Yau-man. Or at least I'm really really trying. Honestly, I'm going to miss the little guy.

Halfway through the episode, I realized that the best possible outcome of the Favorite's trip to tribal would be the offing of another of my all-time favorites, Cirie. Yes, there, I said it. Cirie is a great social player, an Everywoman, and I love having her back on the small screen in Survivor mode. That being said, she was the swing vote this week, and was getting an attitude of "you'll do what I say, because you need me." That kind of attitude doesn't usually work....and I'm amazed that it did this time.

Let's think back to the sixth season of Survivor and the case of poor Christy, the deaf woman who thought she was in a power position. And she was, momentarily, while being courted by both the men's and the women's alliances. But she refused to commit, and so Rob went to the women and suggested they make things easy on themselves and all vote Christy. Which they did, blindsiding her into a bitter rage....and off the island.

Now I was thinking the same thing this week. "Make things easier on everyone, and vote Cirie," popped into my head. She was holding her swing vote over everyone's head, making everyone squirm and figuratively having them carry her chariot (just like she said they should). And let's face it - Cirie is certainly the weakest link when it comes to challenges. For that reason alone, she should be offed.

Remember, we're thinking short game here - the point is to make it to the merge with the most people, so you can conveniently Pagong your opponents before cannibalizing your own. By voting Yau, Cirie was thinking end game - and, certainly, she was right in believing Yau would be hard to beat at a final tribal council. But if your team is decimated before the merge, final tribal is a moot point.

Cirie did make a bold move, which may have saved her from a Christy-like goodbye. She wasn't waffling, she was sure of how she was going to vote - and she expressed her displeasure with anyone suggesting a vote otherwise. Since the Showmance Crew was in courting mode, they succumbed to this strategic move. They could have all said, "Why should we do what she tells us?" - especially since it seems the Showmance Crew believed they had Ami and/or Eliza with them as well. The worse case would be a 4-4 split (Showmance vs. Lonely Hearts), but that would also create the very real possibility of going to merge eight strong.

Sure, it probably hurts more knowing it meant Yau's gone. But at least one favorite - Ami - saw that Cirie had way too much power in the game (just as Christy thought she did back in the Amazon). Back in the Amazon, the other team mates decided Christy needed to be put in their place. Unfortunately, this Thursday, the vote just strengthened Cirie's power position.
